Fugger-Nordendorf 1646 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 3191 in Sincona sale 51 (Zürich, October 2018), where it sold for 4,500 CHF (about US$5,428 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Fugger-Nordendorf, Marquard, 1601-1655. 1/2 Taler 1646. Auf das Begräbnis seiner Schwester Maria. Neun Zeilen Schrift im Lorbeerkranz. Rv. Schriftband mit AD . ASTRA . MECVM . über stehender Diana von vorne mit strahlender Mondsichel und zwei Hirschen. Äusserst selten. Vorzüglich. Hübsche Patina. (Germany, principality of Fugger-Nordendorf, Marquard, 1601-55, half thaler of 1646, on the funeral of his sister Maria. Obverse: nine line inscription in laurel wreath; reverse: ribbon with motto over standing goddess Diana, armillary sphere and two stags. Extremely rare, Extremely fine, Attractive patina.)"
This rare type is not listed in KM and may actually be a medal. The Fuggers were originally a banking family, ennobled for their services to the Hapsburgs. At the time of their mediatization by Napoleon in 1806, the estate was divided into Prince of Fugger-Babenhausen, the Count of Fugger-Glött, Count of Fugger-Kirchberg-Weissenhorn, Count of Fugger-Kirchheim and Count of Fugger-Nordendorf. The territory was partitioned between Wurttemberg and Bavaria.
