This specimen was lot 32870 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $114. The catalog description[1] noted, "Friedberg. Imperial City under Philipp Adolf Rau Kreuzer 1686 MS64 NGC. A truly gem specimen of this nearly 350-year-old beauty, evincing plentiful luster although a bit weakly struck." This type was struck 1685-86 for Philipp Adolf Rau von Holzhausen (1685-92), elected burgrave. At the time, 3 kreuzer = groschen, 4 kreuzer = batzen, 90 kreuzer = one thaler. The free city of Friedberg evolved into a burgraviate and thence passed to Hesse-Darmstadt in 1802. All of its issues are rare.
