Fribourg 1798 42 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 3255 in Sincona sale 64 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 1,350 CHF (about US$1,692 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SWITZERLAND | Freiburg/Fribourg | Sarine et Broye, 42 Kreuzer (Vierteltaler) 1798, Freiburg. Äusserst seltene Erhaltung. Vorzüglich-FDC. (city and canton of Fribourg, department of Sarine et Broye, quarter thaler of 42 kreuzer of 1798, Fribourg mint. Extremely rare condition, Extremely fine-uncirculated.)"
In 1798, the armies of Revolutionary France invaded Switzerland and the old confederation collapsed. The Helvetic Republic was set up and the cantons reorganized. The canton of Fribourg was briefly renamed Sarine et Broye and issued this rare 42 kreuzer. In Fribourg, 56 kreuzer = one gulden, making this coin three quarters of a gulden.
