Fribourg 1798 14 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 4075 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 4,000 CHF (about US$5,386 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Freiburg/Fribourg, Viertelgulden zu 14 Kreuzern 1798, Freiburg. Äusserst seltener Jahrgang. Vorzüglich-FDC. (Switzerland, canton of Fribourg, fourteen kreuzer of 1798, Fribourg mint. Extremely rare date, Extremely fine-uncirculated.)"
This type was struck 1787-90, 1793 and 1797-98. Most of the dates are fairly common but the 1798 is rare. In 1798, the armies of Revolutionary France invaded Switzerland and the old confederation collapsed. The Helvetic Republic was set up and the cantons reorganized.
