Fribourg 1630 batzen
This specimen was part of lot 3138 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), which sold for 150 CHF (about US$218 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Freiburg/Fribourg, Stadt und Kanton, Batzen 1630, Freiburg. 2 Exemplare. Fast vorzüglich. (2). (Switzerland, canton of Fribourg, batzen of 1630, Fribourg mint. About Extremely Fine, two pieces.)"
Das Kapitel Freiburg im Üechtland / Fribourg beinhaltet eine grössere Partie von Scheidemünzen des 17. bis 19. Jahrhunderts, bei denen eine grosse Anzahl Stempelvarianten in vielen Losen zusammengefasst wurden. Der betreffende Sammler hat sich die Mühe gemacht, die Halbbatzen, Schillinge, Kreuzer, Vierer und 2/3 Haller (früher als einseitige Deniers bezeichnet) nach Varianten zu sammeln, und er hat dies auch dokumentiert. So ist eine Arbeit entstanden, welche bis heute noch niemand zusammengestellt hat. (The Fribourg section of this auction contains a large collection of minor coins from the 17th to 19th centuries, with a large number of die variants grouped into many lots. The collector in question took the trouble to collect the half-batzen, shillings, kreuzers, vierer, and 2/3 hallers (formerly known as uniface deniers) by variety, and he also documented this process. The result is a collection that no one has ever compiled before.)
This batzen of 1622-23, 1631-31, 1641 and 1648 features St. Nicholas on the reverse. It is fairly common. One batzen was four kreuzer.
