French Indochina 1894-A cent
This specimen was lot 4767 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it sold for $138. The catalog description [2] noted, "French Cochinchina. Cent, 1894-A. Liberty seated. NGC graded Uncirculated, Details (Surface Hairlines). The Judy Cahn Collection." This one cent piece is one of a type issued for French Indo-China during 1885-94. The succeeding type (KM 7) replaced "REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE" with "UN CENTIEME DE PIASTRE". French Indochina was occupied by the Japanese in 1940. French attempts to reoccupy the area after World War Two were challenged by Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Minh, leading to French defeat and withdrawal in 1954. The colony was divided into Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
