France 1988 100 francs KM-966
This issue, an NCLT, honors that elusive ideal, brotherhood. The bust shown was designed by Jacques-Jean Barré in 1848 but never used at the time. It was demonetized with the coming of the euro and now trades for bullion. This type was also struck in gold and platinum and is rare thus. The second specimen was lot 6883 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Platinum 100 Francs, 1988. Paris Mint. PCGS PROOF-69 Deep Cameo. Ceres Head Type. A brilliant and attractive Proof with hard mirrored fields and frosted cameo devices. From the Liberty Collection."
Recorded mintage: 4,849,011 plus 5,000 in platinum plus 15,000 in gold.
Specification: 31 mm diameter, 15 g, 0.900 fine silver, plain edge; the second specimen 20 g, 0.999 fine platinum.
Catalog reference: F.456/2; KM-966. The second specimen is Fr-608a; KM-966c; Gad-903.
