This specimen was lot 41166 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 50 Francs, 1863-BB. Strasbourg Mint. Napoleon III. NGC AU-55." This type was struck 1862-68 at Paris and Strasbourg, superseding the previous "bare head" fifty francs of Napoleon III. It is not rare, particularly in this lightly circulated condition, and most specimens trade for a little more than their bullion value. This is a common date.
Recorded mintage: 8,251.
Specification: 16.13 g, 0.900 fine gold, 28 mm diameter.
