Sincona sale 59, lot 1428

The first specimen was lot 22533 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 50 Francs, 1862-BB. Strasbourg Mint. Napoleon III. NGC AU-58. Sharply struck with rich golden color on the obverse." The second specimen was lot 1428 in Sincona sale 59 (Zürich, October 2019), where it sold for 750 CHF (about US$908 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"II. Kaiserreich. Napoleon III. 1852-1870. 50 Francs 1862 BB, Strasbourg. Napoleon mit Kranz. Vorzüglich. Kleine Randfehler. ([[France], second empire, Napoleon III, 1852-70, fifty francs of 1862, Strasbourg mint, laureate head. Extremely fine, Minor edge flaws.)"

This type was struck 1862-68 at Paris and Strasbourg, superseding the previous "bare head" fifty francs of Napoleon III. It is not rare, particularly in this lightly circulated condition, and most specimens trade for a little more than their bullion value. This is a common date.

Recorded mintage: 7,310.

Specification: 16.13 g, 0.900 fine gold, the second specimen 16.14 g.

Catalog reference: F.548/2, Fr-583, Gad-1112, KM-804.2.
