Sincona sale 46, lot 361

This specimen was lot 361 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 3,000 CHF (about US$3,600 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Frankreich, Louis XVI. 1774-1792. 2 Louis d`or au buste habillé 1778 (über 1777) W, Lille. Vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XVI, 1774-92, double louis d'or of the uniformed bust of 1778/7, Lille mint. Extremely fine.)"

The double louis of Louis XVI continued to be struck to the standard of 1726 but the price of gold had risen, making the type uneconomical to issue. In 1785, Calonne lowered the weight to 15.30 grams and recoined all the stocks in government hands, rendering this earlier type very rare.

Reported Mintage: 42,480, common for type.

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, 28-29 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by J.-C. Röettiers; this specimen 16.26 g.
