France 1777-Pau ecu
This specimen was lot 1474 in Jean Elsen sale 154 (Brussels, March 2023), where it sold for €80 (about US$104 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XVI (1774-1793), AR écu du Béarn aux rameaux d'olivier, 1777, Pau. D/ B. habillé à g., les cheveux noués par un ruban. R/ Ecu de France couronné, entre deux rameaux d'olivier. Très rare. Taches d'oxydation. Très Beau. Dans le Trouvaille de Labuissière. (kingdom of France, Louis XVI, 1774-93, silver écu of Béarn of the olive branches of 1777, Pau mint. Obverse: uniformed bust left, hair tied in a ribbon; reverse: crowned arms of France between two olive branches. Very rare, stained by corrosion. Very Fine.)"
The Pau mint was a substantial supplier of écus au buste habillé but several of the early dates, including this one, are very scarce. This is priced four times that of 1778-Pau.
Recorded mintage: 240,576[2], a scarce date.
Specification: 29.49 g, 0.917 fine silver, 39-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, this specimen 29,33 g.
