France 1773-& louis d'or

Goldberg sale 128, lot 1333

This specimen was lot 1333 in Goldberg sale 128 (Los Angeles, June 2022), where it sold for $1,920. The catalog description^[1] noted, "France. Louis d'or au bandeau, 1773-& (Aix). Louis XV. Unlisted date in Gadoury for the Bandeau type. The only example graded at PCGS. PCGS graded AU-55." The louis d'or au bandeau was introduced in 1740 and was struck at all the mints. It was supposed to be retired in 1771 when the louis d'or à la vieille tête was introduced but the provincial mints were permitted to use up old dies. The Aix mint struck the old type until 1773, the last mint to do so but these late issues are rare.

Recorded mintage: 15,836, a rare date not priced^[2].

Specification: 8.15 g, 0.917 fine gold, 24 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by J. C. Röettiers.
