France 1771-S sol

Sincona sale 76, lot 1104

This specimen was lot 1104 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 900 CHF (about US$1,093 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE | Kingdom. Louis XV. 1715-1774. Sol à la vieille tête 1771 S, Reims. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Fast FDC. NGC MS64 BN. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, sol of the old head of 1771, Reims mint. Very rare in this condition, About uncirculated, Magnificent condition.)"

The specimen shown is a sol à la vieille tête minted at Reims 1769-73 at the end of the reign of Louis XV. The Reims mint closed in 1773. Eleven mints struck this type. Its face value was 12 deniers, one sol or 1/120 of a silver écu. The type is common in low grade (the SCWC values it at $3 in VG) but well made specimens are scarce.

Recorded mintage: 532,000.

Specification: pure copper, 12.23 g, 28-30 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by C.-N. Röettiers. This specimen is 11.57 g.
