This specimen was lot 70554 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Sol, 1770-S. Reims Mint. Louis XV. PCGS AU-53. A lovely example of the type with even brown patina throughout with just wear on the high points." The specimen shown is a sol à la vieille tête minted at Reims 1770-73 at the end of the reign of Louis XV. The Reims mint closed in 1773. Eleven mints struck this type. Its face value was 12 deniers, one sol or 1/120 of a silver écu. The type is common in low grade (the SCWC values it at $3 in VG) but well made specimens are scarce.

Recorded mintage: 512,000, a common date.

Specification: copper, 12.23 g, 28-30 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by C.-N. Röettiers.
