Sincona sale 63, lot 827

This specimen was lot 827 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 200 CHF (about US$251 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Frankreich, konigreich, Louis XV. 1715-1774. 1/5 Ecu au bandeau 1770, Besançon. Gutes sehr schön. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, fifth écu of the ribbon of 1770, Besançon mint. Good very fine.)"

This coin, called a cinquième d'écu au bandeau, was the equivalent of a twenty cent piece. In the coinage system of the ancien régime, the 1/5 écu = 24 sols. The type was struck 1741-72. Besançon struck this type 1756, 1765, 1770-71. This date is scarce, one of four mints for 1770 (A, ϽC, H, M).

Specification: 5.59 g, 0.917 fine silver, 26 mm diameter, reeded edge, this specimen 5.81 g.
