This specimen was lot 99124 in Heritage sale 61253 (Dallas, January 2022), where it sold for $1,740. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XV gold 2 Louis d'Or 1761-BB AU58 NGC, Strasbourg mint. The first representative of this mint-date Double Louis d'Or we have presented, fielding a pervasive golden shimmer that solidifies its position on the cusp of Mint State certification. A few minor adjustment marks occur of Louis' bust, though these generally remain quite light and inconspicuous." This type was struck 1742-73 in some numbers but the Strasbourg mint issued this type 1742-49, 1756-64, 1766-72 only. Strasbourg's location near the border with Germany made it a major producer of this type, struck for soldier's pay.

Recorded mintage: 89,393[2], a fairly common date.

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 28-29 mm diameter, designed by J.-C. Röettiers.

Catalog reference: Fr-463, Dr/4 № 792, Dr/2 № 542, KM 519.4, Dupl-1642, Gad-346 (R).
