SB925-74754r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74754 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/20 Ecu, 1760/57-A. Paris Mint. Louis XV. PCGS MS-63. Overdate variety. From the Richard August Collection." This diminutive coin, called a vingtième d'écu au bandeau, was the French equivalent of a half dime. In the coinage system of the ancien régime, the 1/20 écu = 6 sols. The type was struck 1740-69 but is recorded for the Paris mint ("A") in 1740-50, 1752-56, 1758-61 and 1765-66 only. Despite the interrupted dates of issue, Paris was the most faithful issuer of this denomination. The 1760-AA the only other issue for the year.

Recorded mintage: 8,300, a rare date[2].

Specification: 1.47 g, 0.917 fine silver, 18-19 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by J.-C. Röettiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 857, Dr/2 № 588, KM-510.1; Gad-284; Ciani-2128; Dup-1684.
