Shown is a écu aux trois couronnes (écu with three crowns) struck at the Montpellier mint in the last years of Louis XIV's reign. This is the last type of écu struck during the Sun King's life. The type was struck 1709-15 in substantial numbers. There are also 1/10, 1/4 and 1/2 écus struck during this period with this design. Droulers[1] notes this date as rare. The Montpellier mint, never prolific, closed in 1791. This specimen was lot 22147 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $383. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1710-N. PCGS XF-40 Secure Holder. Louis XIV (1643-1715). Typical strike. Gray tone."

Specification: 30.59 g, 0.917 fine silver, edge lettered "DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM", designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
