SB222-73610r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73610 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1710-E. Tours Mint. Louis XIV. NGC AU-58. Offering commendable luster and rich details in the finely engraved areas of the design, this wonderfully charming Ecu is certain to find a treasured home amongst any collection." Shown is a écu aux trois couronnes (écu with three crowns) struck at the Tours mint in the last years of Louis XIV's reign. This is the last type of écu struck during the Sun King's life. The type was struck 1709-15 in substantial numbers. There are also 1/10, 1/4 and 1/2 écus struck during this period with this design. Droulers[2] notes this date as scarce despite the substantial mintage. The Tours mint, never prolific, closed in 1771.

Recorded mintage: 514,586[2].

Specification: 30.59 g, 0.917 fine silver, edge lettered "DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM", designed by Norbert Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 524, Dr/2 № 450, Dav-1324; KM-386.5; Gad-229.
