Jean Elsen sale 137, lot 1013

This specimen was lot 1013 in Jean Elsen sale 137 (Brussels, June 2018), where it sold for €120 (about US$167 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR demi-écu aux huit L, 1704C, Saint-Lô. 2e type. 4e réformation. D/ B. à d., cuirassé à l'antique. R/ Croix formée de huit L couronnés, cantonnée de quatre lis, avec écu de France rond au centre. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver half écu of 8 L's of 1704, Saint-Lô mint, second type, fourth reformation. Obverse: armored bust right; reverse: cross formed of eight crowned L's, cantonned with eight lilies, round arms of France at the center. Very fine.)"

Shown is a 1705 demi-écu aux 8 L of the Caen mint. Note strong evidence of an undertype; this coin usually comes struck over an earlier half écu, Droulers[1] notes that all known specimens from this mint are overstruck. The Saint-Lô used the "C" mintmark until its closure in 1656; "C" was assigned to Can when it opened in 1693. The bulk of this type were struck 1704-05 but a few are known dated as late as 1709. It is the second demi-écu aux 8 L as the first demi-écu aux 8 L was issued 1690-93.

Recorded mintage: common, all "flans reformées".

Specification: 13.72 g, 0.917 fine silver, 32-35 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers; this specimen 13,27 g.

Catalog reference: Dupl-1552A; Gad-194; Dr/4 No. 628, Dr/2 № 439.
