Sincona sale 18, lot 2167

This specimen was lot 2167 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 7,250 (about US$9,553 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"1/2 Ecu au buste drapé à lantique 1687. Lyon Selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, half écu of the draped bust of 1687, Lyon mint, rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1686-89 in small quantities and was the victim of repeated "reformations," where older écus were called in and restruck. As a result, the type is quite rare today. It was succeeded by the demi-écu aux 8 L of 1690-93. Droulers[1] prices this date as rare.

Recorded mintage: 38,830 approx.

Specification: 13.72 g, 0.917 fine silver, 37-41 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by F. Warin, this specimen 13.61 g.

Catalog reference: KM 261.2, Duplessy 1507; Gadoury 181, Dr/4 № 585.
