Sincona sale 18, lot 2166

This specimen was lot 2166 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 650 (about US$856 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"1/2 Ecu à la cravate 1682. Aix-en-Provence Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, half écu of the necktie of 1682, Aix mint, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1672-85 in fairly large quantities but was the victim of repeated "reformations," where older écus were called in and restruck. As a result, the type is rare today. It was succeeded by the demi-écu drapé à l'antique of 1684-87. Droulers[1] prices this date as common, but even a common date is priced over four times that of an demi-écu à la mèche longue.

Recorded mintage: 168,198 approx.

Specification: 13.72 g, 0.917 fine silver, 37-41 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by F. Warin, this specimen 13.41 g.

Catalog reference: Duplessy 1494. Dr/4 № 573.
