This specimen was lot 33569 in Heritage sale 3106 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XIV gold Louis d'Or 1687-A MS60 NGC, Paris mint. Louis d'Or a la perruque. An immensely flashy and confidently Mint State offering punctuated by notable reflectivity to the fields lit ablaze upon illumination. Particularly charming and surprisingly scarce in this quality. From the Mac and Rob Woodside Collection." This specimen is a louis d'or à la perruque, struck at the Paris mint 1683-89. The type was superseded by the louis d'or à l'écu which was issued 1690-93. While no gold coins of Louis XIV can be called inexpensive, this period is scarce with no common dates.

Recorded mintage: unknown[2].

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, plain edge, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 376b or 376d, Dr/2 № 252, KM 256.1, Fr-426; Gad-249 (R2).
