Künker sale 441, lot 4987

This specimen was lot 4987 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €11,000 (about US$15,133 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH Louis XIV, 1643-1715. 1/2 Ecu au buste drapé à l'antique 1687 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1686 geändert) A, Paris. LVD · XIIII · D · G (Sonne) - FR · ET · NAV · REX Brustbild r. mit umgelegtem Mantel//(Halbmond) SIT NOMEN DOMINI - BENEDICTVM 1687, unten Münzzeichen "A" Gekröntes Wappen. Äußerst selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, fast vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, half écu of the antique bust of 1687, Paris mint, 1687/6 overdate. Obverse: draped bust right; reverse: crowned arms. Extremely rare in this condition, attractive example with fine patina, about extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1686-89 in small quantities and was the victim of repeated "reformations," where older écus were called in and restruck. As a result, the type is quite rare today. It was succeeded by the demi-écu aux 8 L of 1690-93. Droulers prices this date as rare.

Recorded mintage: 148,701.

Specification: 13.72 g, 0.917 fine silver, 32 mm diameter, lettered edge.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 583 or 584, KM 261.1, Duplessy 1507; Gadoury 181.
