France 1550-D 2 henri d'or
This specimen was lot 1236 in Jean Elsen sale 120 (Brussels, March 2014), where it sold for €4,400 (about US$7,235 including buyer's fees. The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Henri II (1547-1559), AV double Henri d'or, 1550 D, Lyon. Droit: B. l. et cuirassé à droite. Revers: Croix formée de quatre H couronnés, cantonnée de deux croissants et deux lis. Différent: F sous la date (François Guilhem). Un petit trèfle dans le croissant au premier canton. Avec point 12e au droit et au revers. Extrêmement Rare. Le flan légèrement voilé. Beau portrait. Seulement 600 p. frappées. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Henry II (1547-59), gold double henri d'or of 1550, Lyon mint. Obverse: laureate, armored bust to right; reverse: cross formed of four crowned "H's" with two crescents and two lilies in the fields. Mintmaster "F" and a dot under the twelfth letter of the reverse. Extremely rare, slightly wavy planchet, nice portrait, very fine.)"
This type was struck at numerous mints 1550-62. It had a face value of one hundred sols tournois, the same as two écu d'or. It is the first type, with a bare head (not laureate) and lilies and crescents on the reverse. The denomination was continued after his death in 1559 by his teenage sons, Francis II and Charles IX.
