France 1550A 2 sols rev DSLR.jpg

This gros de Nesle was a billon coin issued in large numbers during the reign of Henry II (r. 1547-59). This specimen is from the Paris mint and seems to have been struck 1550 only. This type acquired its nickname from the Hôtel de Nesle in Paris, where it was struck. Milled coinage was experimental in the sixteenth century and would not be generally adopted in France until the reform of 1640-42. This type had a face value of thirty deniers tournois. More double sols Parisis were struck until 1568. The first specimen was lot 2718 in Sincona sale 20 (Zürich, October 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Gros de Nesle 1550. Paris. Fast vorzüglich. (nice extremely fine.)"

Recorded mintage: 2,657,520.

Specification: 0.319 fine silver, 5.97 g, the first specimen 5.84 g, the second specimen 5.70 g.

Catalog reference: Duplessy 994, Sb 4456.
