France 1549-L ecu d'or Fr-365
This specimen was lot 457 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €26,000 (about US$33,730 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH, Henri II, 1547-1559. Ecu d'or à l'effigie 1549, L, Bayonne. Vorderseite ohne Binnenkreis. + HENRICVS · Z · DEI · GRACIA · FR · REX · Gekröntes und geharnischtes Brustbild r.//* XPS · VINCIT · XPS · REGNAT · XPS · IM · L · 1549 (Anker) Gekrönter Wappenschild zwischen zwei gekrönten H, darunter Münzstättenzeichen. GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Goldpatina, sauber ausgeprägt, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Sammlung Marcheville, Auktion Florange-Ciani, Paris November 1927, Nr. 2608. Dieser äußerst seltene goldene Ecu zeigt das frühe Brustbild des Königs mit Krone, die im Münzbild wie aufgesetzt wirkt. Diese spezielle Darstellung findet sich nur bei den Prägungen der Münzstätte Bayonne und zählt zu den seltensten Münztypen der französischen Numismatik. Obverse: crowned and armored bust right; reverse: crowned arms between two crowned "H's", mint mark underneath. Extremely rare, very attractive example with a fine gold patina, sharply struck, very fine to extremely fine. Ex: the Marcheville Collection, Florange-Ciani auction, Paris November 1927, No. 2608. This extremely rare gold ecu shows the early bust of the king with a crown, which appears to be attached to the coin design. This special representation can only be found on the coins of the Bayonne Mint and is one of the rarest coin types in French numismatics.)"
Sombart notes a demi-écu d'or à l'effigie may exist (Sb 4898) but none have been seen in many decades. In 1550, Henry II dropped the écu d'or in favor of the self-named henri d'or and its double.
