Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 982

This specimen was lot 982 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €360 (about US$468 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, De Staten in opstand (1577-1584), AR halve Statendaalder, 1578, Brugge. Vz/ Gekroond bb. van Philips II v.v., met scepter en wapenschild voor zich houdend. Kz/ Kruis gevormd door de letters P-H onder kronen. Waarde in het veld. Barst in de muntplaat. Mooie patina. Prachtig. (county of Flanders, States Revolt, 1577-84, silver half States dollar of 1578, Bruges mint. Obverse: crowned half-length bust of Philip II holding a scepter and supporting a shield; reverse: cross formed of the letters "P-H" under crowns, an "S" in the center. Planchet crack, nice patina, Extremely Fine.)"

We see this type, issued during the revolt of the southern provinces against Philip II of Spain, also from Hainaut and Brabant. Deliberately overvalued to raise money for the war effort against Spain, its circulating life was brief.
