Jean Elsen sale 140, lot 481

This specimen was lot 481 in Jean Elsen sale 140 (Brussels, March 2019), where it sold for €650 (about US$866 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HAINAUT, Comté, Les Etats en révolte (1577-1579), AR demi-écu des Etats, 1577, Mons. D/ Le roi à mi-corps de f., couronné et cuirassé, ten. un sceptre de son bras abaissé et devant lui l'écu d'Autriche-Bourgogne. R/ Croix formée des lettres P/H/S couronnées, accostée de 16-S et cantonnée de quatre fleurons. Très Beau. (county of Hainaut, the states in revolt, 1577-79, silver half écu of 1577, Mons mint. Obverse: a crowned and armored half-length bust of the king supports the arms of Austria-Burgundy and bears a scepter; reverse: a cross is formed of the crowned monogram "PHS", dividing 16-S and cantonned with four florets. Very Fine.)"

It was sold again as lot 1492 in Jean Elsen sale 155 (Brussels, June 2023), where it sold for €950 (about US$1,245 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"HAINAUT, Comté, Les Etats en révolte (1577-1579), AR demi-écu des Etats, 1577, Mons. Après la Pacification de Gand, tous les Pays-Bas se trouvaient réunis dans leur opposition au gouvernement espagnol. En 1577 et 1578, les Etats généraux firent frapper des écus, demis et quarts d"écus des Etats au buste et à la titulature de Philippe II. L"écu royal fut cependant remplacé par l"ancien écu d"Autriche-Bourgogne de Philippe le Beau et Charles Quint. L"écu des Etats fut émis à 32 sous qui était le cours des daldres d"empire, des écus de Bourgogne et des daldres au lion hollandais (les "leeuwendaalders" émis à un cours forcé en 1575 par les Etats de Hollande pour financer les dépenses militaires contre l"Espagne). La monnaie des Etats s"opposait cependant totalement à la politique monétaire royale qui visait surtout la stabilité du pied de la monnaie. La différence entre ce cours forcé de 32 sous et la valeur intrinsèque permettait également en partie le financement de l"effort de guerre. Les Etats de Hainaut décidèrent d"ouvrir un atelier à Mons pour y battre monnaie en leur nom. Le maître Simon de Malines y fit frapper les écus et demi-écus des Etats en 1577 et 1578 avant de demander le transfert de l"atelier à Tournai. (After the Pacification of Ghent, all the Low Countries were united in their opposition to the Spanish government. In 1577 and 1578, the States General struck écus, half and quarter écus of the States with the bust and title of Philip II. The royal shield was however replaced by the former Austria-Burgundy arms of Philip the Fair and Charles V. The states' ecu was issued at 32 sous which was the rate of the thalers of the empire, the ecus of Burgundy and the Dutch lion daalders (the "leeuwendaalders" issued at a compulsory rate in 1575 by the States of Holland to finance the military expenditure against Spain). The currency of the States was however totally opposed to the royal monetary policy which aimed above all at the stability of the currency. The difference between this forced rate of 32 cents and the intrinsic value also financed the war effort in part. The States of Hainaut decided to open a workshop in Mons to mint coins in their name. Mintmaster Simon de Mechelen had the écus and half-écus of the States minted there in 1577 and 1578 before requesting the transfer of the workshop to Tournai.)"

We see this type, issued during the revolt of the southern provinces against Philip II of Spain, also from Flanders and Brabant.
