Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 577

This specimen was lot 577 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €200 (about US$265 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Les Etats en révolte (1577-1581), AR demi-écu des Etats, 1577, Bruxelles. Avec B dans la date. D/ Le roi à mi-corps de f., couronné et cuirassé, ten. un sceptre fleurdelisé et devant lui l'écu d'Autriche-Bourgogne. R/ Croix formée des lettres P/H/S couronnées, accostée de 16-S et cantonnée de quatre fleurons. Fines griffes. presque Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, state's revolt of 1577-81, silver half écu of the Estates, 1577, Brussels mint, with B by the date. Obverse: crowned and armored half-length bust of the king facing, holding a scepter and a shield with the arms of Austria-Burgundy; reverse: cross formed of crowned monogram "PHS", dividing the value and cantonned with four flowers. Fine scratches, about Very Fine.)"

We see this type, issued during the revolt of the southern provinces against Philip II of Spain, also from Flanders and Hainaut.
