This type is listed for 1872-76, 1889-93, 1907-17 and was struck for Finland by the czarist administration. Russian defeats in World War One enabled the Finns, who had long chafed under Russian rule, to declare independence. This specimen was lot 20403 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $4,700. The catalog description[1] noted, "FINLAND. 50 Pennia, 1876-S. NGC VF-35. KEY DATE, and one of the great rarities of Finnish numismatics. Reported mintage of 600 with few surviving examples available today. Light even tone accentuating the devices, and with fully problem free rims and surfaces. Far nicer than most other surviving examples."
