This type was struck in San Francisco for the Fiji Islands in 1942-43. Sterling coinage was issued for the islands starting in 1934. This was the only time this denomination was struck in 0.900 fine silver; the other dates are 0.500 fine silver. The World War Two issues were extensively saved by military personnel stationed there and those are the dates most commonly seen today. Decimal conversion occurred in 1967-69, the same time as Britain. Fiji left the British Commonwealth in 1987 but rejoined in 1997.
Recorded mintage: 500,000.
Specification: 5.66 g, 0.900 fine silver, 23.5 mm diameter.
