Coinage was initiated for the Fiji Islands in 1934, the year after New Zealand. Altho mintages were small, enough were saved that most dates are common today. The proofs, however, are rare. The San Francisco mint issued this denomination 1942-43. Many were saved by the American soldiers stationed in Fiji. The pre-war issue (KM 11, 1938-41) was only 0.500 fine. The next sixpence was KM 19 of Elizabeth II, struck in copper-nickel 1953-67. The sterling coinage ceased in 1968.
Recorded mintage: 400,000.
Specification: 2.82 g, 0.900 fine silver.
