The specimen shown is an example of a type struck for Estonia 1992 and 1996. In 1997, the weight was reduced to 2 g and the alloy converted to nickel plated steel. Estonia, long occupied by Czarist Russia, obtained its independence in the aftermath of World War One. Reoccupied by the Russians in 1940, she was subject to Soviet rule until 1991, when the collapse of the Communists allowed the Estonians to once again reclaim independence.

Recorded mintage: 31,280,000 for 1991-92.
