Künker Auction 441, lot 4940

This specimen was lot 4940 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €5,500 (about US$7,566 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BALTIKUM, ESTLAND/Reval Unter Schweden. Christina, 1632-1654. Reichstaler 1652. Variante mit Münzmeistersignatur unter dem Wappen. Von größter Seltenheit. Sauber gestopftes Loch, kl. Probierspur am Rand, fast sehr schön. (Baltic States, Estonia, Reval mint, under Sweden. Christina, 1632-54, thaler of 1652, variety with the initials under the arms. Extremely rare, plugged, test mark on the edge, about very fine.)"

Eight öre was a mark; six marks was a riksdaler and ten marks was (roughly) a ducat in gold. Fiscal manipulations were frequent in Sweden during this period so equivalents are approximate. This type is listed for 1652 only and a variety exists with the intials under the date (KM 8.2). Peter the Great greatly desired possession of Estonia and occupied it in 1710; the Swedes formally ceded it to him in 1721. It remained Russian until after World War One.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 27,75 g.

Catalog reference: Ahlström 64 a; Neumann 21 var; KM 8.1, Dav-4585; Haljak 1279 (4R, this example).
