Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74467
SB1122-74467r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74467 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "ESTONIA. Reval Silver Ore, 1626. Gustav II Adolf. NGC AU-55. Struck during the period of Swedish Administration. Reval is the earlier name of Tallinn, which is today the capital of Estonia. This coin type is normally found in lower grades. An AU 55 is a treat to find indeed." Eight öre was a mark; six marks was a riksdaler and ten marks was (roughly) a ducat in gold. Fiscal manipulations were frequent in Sweden during this period so equivalents are approximate. This type is listed for 1622-28. Peter the Great greatly desired possession of Estonia and occupied it in 1710; the Swedes formally ceded it to him in 1721. It remained Russian until after World War One.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, 21 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-2, SB-61.
