Stack's Bowers September 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74694

The first specimen was lot 22201 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $394. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 6 Pence, 1562. NGC VF-35. Elizabeth I (1558-1603). Milled. Tall narrow bust and plain dress." The second specimen was lot 74694 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[2] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 6 Pence, 1562. London Mint. Elizabeth I. NGC EF-45. Pale blue tones highlight old golden gray surfaces. Good residual luster remains on both sides, only minimal hairlines or handling, a few very light old scratches in left obverse field, a speck of old residue in lower right reverse field. A handsome example of this early milled type. Sixpences of Elizabeth are among the most often found coins in 17th century contexts in Virginia, the land named the Virgin Queen. Needless to say, most of those do not emerge from the ground this beautifully preserved. From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Ex: Jim Jones Collection. Ex: Dr. Robert Hesselgesser Collection. Ex: Ira & Larry Goldberg Auction (5/2007) Lot # 3196." It is not, strictly speaking, correct to refer to Great Britain until the reign of James I, who united England and Scotland. Numismatists do not count the milled coinage as part of the sequence of first thru seventh issues.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 48 grains (3.11 g), 0.925 fine silver.

Catalog reference: the first specimen S-2594; the second specimen S-2595.
