England SB818-21028r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21018 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Angel, ND (1499-1502). Henry VII (1485-1509). NGC VF-30. Anchor mintmark. Some softness appears on the angel's head but all the other major details are intact. A rather affordable example of this highly collected Angel type that was introduced during the reign of Edward IV in 1465 and lasted until 1642 when it was coined under Charles I." This denomination was struck until the reign of Charles I and was worth one-third of a pound or six shillings eight pence. It is not, strictly speaking, correct to refer to Great Britain until the reign of James I, who united England and Scotland.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: gold, 5.18 g (80 grains), this specimen 4.98 gms.

Catalog reference: Fr-151; S-2183; North-1696.
