This specimen was lot 72296 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Groat, ND (1466-67). London Mint; mm: crown. Edward IV (first reign). PCGS AU-55. This bright and glossy example delivers a strong strike, and limited signs of actual handling." The groat (cognate of "great", meaning large) was four pence and first appeared in the reign of Edward I. Edward IV's first, or heavy, groats were 60 grains (3.88 g) while the later, or light, groats (shown here) were 48 grains (3.11 g).
