England (1464-65) groat
This specimen was lot 72297 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Groat, ND (1464-65). London Mint; mm: rose. Edward IV (first reign). PCGS AU-50. Light coinage, type Vc. Obverse: Crowned facing bust within tressure of arches; quatrefoils flanking neck; Reverse: Long cross pattee; triple pellets in quarters, with extra pellet in first quarter. Though exhibiting a somewhat irregular flan, this lightly circulated specimen offers an elegant tone and some appealing brilliance remaining in the protected areas." The groat (cognate of "great", meaning large) was four pence and first appeared in the reign of Edward I. Edward IV's first, or heavy, groats were 60 grains (3.88 g) while the later, or light, groats (shown here) were 48 grains (3.11 g).
