This specimen was lot 34728 in Heritage sale 3094 (Chicago, August 2021), where it sold for $5,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: Edward IV (1st Reign, 1461-1470) gold 1/2 Ryal ND (1466-1467) MS62 NGC, Tower mint, Crown mm, Light Coinage. ЄD | WΛRD • DI GRΛ RЄX • ΛnG (trefoil stops), crowned half-length figure of Edward standing facing in ship banner inscribed with Є on stern and rose on side, sword in right hand, shield in left / (crown) DOmInЄ • nЄ • In FVRORЄ • TVO ΛRGVΛS • mЄ • (trefoil stops), rose in radiant sun over floriate cross, crowns and lions in angles, all within polylobe with large trefoils in spandrels. Astounding quality to say the least, particularly when one is mindful of the sharpness of the central features, which almost ubiquitously come with at least some degree of weakness in this series. To date, only a single piece has been certified a point finer at PCGS, clearly pointing to the undeniable conditional rarity of the present piece. Far more challenging than the larger Ryals of this monarch, and sure to inspire fierce bidding among connoisseurs." Lobel[2] notes that in the 1460's the price of gold rose to where nobles were being exported from England to the Continent. To forestall this, in 1464 the king raised the value of the noble to eight shillings four pence and introduced a new coin, the rose noble, tariffed at ten shillings. It was superseded in 1470 by the gold angel.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: gold, 60 grains (3.9 g), this specimen 3.83 g.
