England (1467-68) groat
This specimen was lot 982 in Jean Elsen sale 146 (Brussels, November 2020), where it sold for €220 (about US$321 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"GRANDE-BRETAGNE, Edouard IV, 1er règne (1461-1470), AR groat, s.d. (1467-1468), Londres. Monnayage léger. Différent: rose/soleil. D/ T. couronnée de f. dans un polylobe. Deux quatrefeuilles de part et d'autre du cou. Sur la poitrine, une fleur regravée sur C ou E. R/ Croix longue cantonnée de quatre groupes de trois globules. Rare Belle patine. Très Beau. Hybride frappé avec un coin de droit de Coventry ou York regravé. (kingdom of Great Britain, Edward IV, first reign, 1461-70, undated silver groat, London mint, light coinage, rose/sunburst privy mark. Obverse: crowned head facing, in a polylobe, two rosettes near the king's neck; on his breast, a flower engraved over a "C" or "E"; reverse: long cross cantonned with four groups of three pellets. Rare, nice patina, Very Fine. Mule struck with an obverse die originally cut for Coventry or York.)"
A groat was fourpence and first appeared in the reign of Edward I. Edward IV's first, or heavy, groats were 60 grains (3.88 g) while the later, or light, groats (shown here) were 48 grains (3.11 g).
