England (1040-42) penny S-1170
This specimen was lot 41277 in Stack's Bowers Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Pittsburgh, August 2026), where it sold for $1,342. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Anglo-Saxon. Kings of All England. Penny, ND (ca. 1040-42). Lund (in Denmark) Mint; Garfine, moneyer. Harthacnut. PCGS Genuine--Peck Marked, Unc Details. A sharply struck specimen, this otherwise Mint State example offers alluring toning and intense crispness across both sides, with the noted peck marks being the only such distraction, albeit rather minor." Harthacnut was a son of Cnut the Great who spent most of his short reign in Denmark, where this penny was struck. He was succeeded in 1042 by his half brother, Edward the Confessor.
