Künker Auction 425, lot 1658

This specimen was lot 1658 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €340 (about US$482 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"EUROPÄISCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · ENGLAND, Cnut, 1016-1035. Penny, um 1017-1023, Lincoln oder London. Quatrefoil type. Münzmeister EDELNODH (Aethelnoth). Gekröntes Brustbild l., umher Vierpaß//Doppelfadenkreuz, an den Enden Halbmonde, in der Mitte Vierpaß. Feine Tönung, fast vorzüglich. (kingdom of England, Canute, 1016-35, undated penny, circa 1017-23, Lincoln or London mints, quatrefoil type, moneyer Aethelnoth. Obverse: crowned bust left in a quadrilobe; reverse: double voided cross with two crescents at the end of each arm, quadrilobe at the center. Fine toning, about extremely fine.)"

The reign of Cnut of Denmark saw the use of several designs of the silver penny as the moneyers tried to stay ahead of the counterfeiters. This one is called the "Quatrefoil type" because of the quatrefoils on both sides.
