"EUROPÄISCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · ENGLAND, Edward the Confessor, 1042-1066. Penny, um 1044-1046, Oxford. Radiate type. Münzmeister BRIHTDOLD (Brihtwold). Gekröntes Brustbild l.//Kleines Kreuz. Obverse: crowned bust left; reverse: short cross, Fine toning, extremely fine.)"
The reign of Edward the Confessor saw the use of several designs of the silver penny as the moneyers tried to stay ahead of the counterfeiters. This one is called the "Radiate type" because of the spikes emanating from the king's crown. Oxford was not the only mint.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 1.09 g, silver, 18 mm diameter, this specimen 1,30 g.
