El Salvador 1892-CAM 20 centavos
The first specimen was lot 27929 in Heritage sale 3031 (Dallas, January 2014), where it sold for $1,527.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic Proof 20 Centavos 1892-CAM, PF62 PCGS. Very rare in Proof and undervalued in SCWC." This scarce type was struck in 1892 for El Salvador as part of the introduction of decimal coinage to that unhappy land. Prior to the Heaton mint one centavos of 1889, El Salvador used various foreign (mostly Guatemalan) and countermarked coins. The series of 1892 included a centavo (bronze), five, ten, twenty and fifty centavos (silver), one peso, and various gold pieces (all very rare).
Recorded mintage: 146,000 plus a few proofs.
Specification: 5 g, 0.835 fine silver, .135 troy oz ASW.
