This specimen was lot 3257 in Aureo y Calicó sale 422 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 15 € (about US$20 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Egipto. AH 1390 (1970). 50 piatras. AG. S/C- [about uncirculated]." In 1958 Egypt, under Gamal Nasser, joined in a formal alliance with Syria. Thus, from 1958-1971, Egypt became officially the 'United Arab Republic'. Nasser's sudden death in 1970 sent a shock thru Egypt similar to the assassination of president Kennedy in 1963. The alliance with Syria did not last long, and the title was abandoned in 1971 during a purge of the Egyptian political system by Anwar Sadat.
