Egypt 1964 50 piastres
This specimen was lot 73556 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "EGYPT. 50 Piastres, AH 1384/1964. NGC PROOF-67 Ultra Cameo. Diversion of the Nile commemorative. Argent and original with frosty devices contrasted by deeply mirrored fields. A seldom seen issue from the age of the United Arab Republic." This commemorative honoring the opening of the Aswan Dam was accompanied by a gold ten pounds (KM 409), five pounds (KM 408) and silver five (KM 404), ten (KM 405) and twenty-five piastres (KM 406). After Nasser's death in 1970, the alliance with Syria was dropped and the country renamed the Arab Republic of Egypt.
