Egypt 1960 pound
This specimen was lot 788 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 550 CHF (about US$727 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ÄGYPTEN, Vereinigte Arabische Republik, 1958-1971. 1 Pound 1379 AH (1960), Assuan Staudamm. Fast FDC. (Egypt, United Arab Republic, 1958-71, one pound of AH 1379, for Aswan Dam. About uncirculated.)"
The Aswan dam was the first modern dam on the Nile. Construction began in 1960, was completed in 1970 and the lake behind it was filled by 1976. The dam became controversial when the United States declined to finance the project and Nasser accepted Soviet assistance instead. The dam is celebrated on numerous Egyptian coins.
