Eggenberg 1631 thaler Dav-3383
This specimen was lot 2100 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 4,800 CHF (about US$6,645 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RDR/ÖSTERREICH Eggenberg Johann Ulrich, 1598/1623 - 1634. Taler 1631, Prag. Büste nach rechts mit Mühlsteinkragen, darunter Münzmeisterzeichen Prägestock. Rv. Vierfeldiges Wappen mit Mittelschild, von Orden des Goldenen Vlies umgeben, unter Fürstenhut. Sehr selten. Schöne Patina. Fast vorzüglich. (Principality of Eggenberg, John Ulrich, 1598-1634, thaler of 1631, Prague mint. Obverse: ruffed bust to right; reverse: quartered arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around, prince's hat above. Very rare, nice patina, good extremely fine.)"
This coin was minted in 1630-33 for the obscure Austrian family of Eggenberg. This type was struck the three years only and is rare, like all the issues from this locale.
